Today
more than ever, students rely on technology as part of the composition process:
this is true whether or not the instructor consciously integrates technology in
the classroom. I assign discussions and readings that invite students to consider
and critique the ways their lived experience is mediated through technology.
For on-ground teaching, I believe it makes sense to use course management
software for some class discussions or peer reviews, and all of my F2F classes are
web-enhanced. Desire 2 Learn helps me plan and organize lessons and materials and allows me to maintain a “paperless” classroom so students can access
materials any time. Students often bring laptops, tablets, and smart phones to
class, and I encourage this. I invite students to share original and effective
ways to incorporate smart phones and tablets during peer reviews and group
discussions.
